MESSAGE FROM THE GMBF 2023 ORGANIZING COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN

On behalf of the Organising Committee, I would like to extend my warm welcome to all participants of the Global Muslim Business Forum 2023 (GMBF 2023). The Sarawak Government is very honoured to host this Forum in partnership with KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific, Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (ICCIA), and Global One at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.

The theme for GMBF 2023 is centered on “Innovation and Transformation in Islamic Economies”. In this rapidly changing global business landscape, it is critical for us to embrace data and innovation to tap into the growing demand for halal products and services from Muslim and Non-Muslim consumers globally, which is expected to grow over USD3 trillion by 2028.

Under Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, we are leveraging on our strategic location and abundance of fresh water, arable land and renewable energy to promote high value added manufacturing activities based on data and innovation. We have developed industrial parks equipped with the necessary infrastructure to support sustainable development of high-tech industries in Kuching, halal related activities in Tanjung Manis, oil and gas industries in Bintulu, Miri and Lawas and heavy industrial clusters in Samalaju.

Sarawak also aggressively pursuing green economy to support Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) principle. We are the forefront in the production of clean and renewable energy such as hydropower, hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel in the region. In addition, we promote low carbon economy through carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and carbon trading.

GMBF offers participants the chance to explore innovative solutions to drive growth and transformation and seize the immense investment and trade opportunities in Sarawak.

Once again, I extend my warm welcome to all participants, near and far and wish you a fruitful forum in Sarawak, Land of Hornbill. I also invite participants to explore places of interest in Sarawak, our culture and diversity and enjoy our hospitality.

Thank you.

DATUK AMAR HAJI AWANG TENGAH BIN ALI HASAN
DEPUTY PREMIER OF SARAWAK
SECOND MINISTER FOR NATURAL RESOURCES AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT
MINISTER FOR INTERNATIONAL TRADE, INDUSTRY AND INVESTMENT SARAWAK

About Sarawak

Kuching is the capital city in the State of Sarawak in Malaysia. The Head of State is the Governor, also known as the Yang di-Pertua Negeri, while the Head of Government is the Premier. Sarawak is divided into administrative divisions and districts, governed by a system that is closely modelled on the Westminster parliamentary system and was the earliest state legislature system in Malaysia. Under the Malaysian constitution, Sarawak has greater autonomy than the States of Peninsular Malaysia. Because of its natural resources, Sarawak specialises in the export of oil and gas, timber and oil palms, but also possesses strong manufacturing, energy and tourism sectors. It is ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse; major ethnic groups including Iban, Malay, Chinese, Melanau, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu. English and Malay are the two official languages of the State; there is no official religion. Sarawak has a tropical geography with an equatorial climate and experiences two monsoon seasons: a northeast monsoon and a southwest monsoon. The northeast monsoon occurs between November and February, bringing heavy rainfall while the southwest monsoon, which occurs between March and October, brings somewhat less rainfall.

Travel Information

Visitors to Sarawak are required to fill in an immigration form upon arrival. Malaysia has strict anti-drug trafficking laws and those caught smuggling illegal drugs will be sentenced to a mandatory death penalty. Every person entering the country must possess a valid Passport or internationally recognized Travel Document. Visitors may also use a Document in lieu of Passport from the Immigration Representative for entry purposes. Application for the Document in lieu of Passport can be made at any Malaysian Representative Office abroad.

Foreign nationals who require a visa to enter Malaysia must apply and obtain a visa in advance at the Malaysian Representative Office before entering the country. A visa that has been granted is not a guarantee that the holder will be allowed to enter Malaysia. The final decision lies with the Immigration Officer at the entry point.

The Malaysian Immigration Department also allows online visa application to foreign nationals from certain countries through eVISA. You can check for visa eligibility, requirements and fees by country, as well as eVISA eligibility and any other pertinent information by going to the website of the Malaysian Immigration Department at www.imi.gov.my.
