Prof. Dr. M. Din Syamsuddin

Former Chairman, Muhammadiyah & Former Special Envoy of President of Indonesia for Interfaith and Inter Civilizational Dialogue, Indonesia

PROFILE

Prof. Dr. M. Din Syamsuddin is a Professor of Islamic Political Thought at National Islamic University, Jakarta. He was President of Muhammadiyah for two periods, 2005 to 2015 as well as Chairman of Indonesian Council of Ulama during 2014-2015, and then from 2015 to 2020 served as Chairman of Advisory Council of Indonesian Council of Ulama. He was appointed as Special Envoy of the President of Republic Indonesia for Interfaith and Inter-civilization Dialogue and Cooperation from November 2017 until September 2018.

He has been active on interfaith dialogues and cooperation since ages, as he has been acting as Presidium of Inter-Religious Council - Indonesia as well as Chairman of Center for Dialogue and Cooperation among Civilizations (CDCC), and Chairman of World Peace Forum based in Jakarta. In international level, he is President-Moderator of Asian Conference of Religions for Peace (ACRP) based in Tokyo, Japan and Co-President of Religions for Peace International based in New York, USA, since 2006.

He also active in environmental issues; in 2015, he joined as a Member of Leadership Council of United Nations - Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN-SDSN) based in New York. Afterwards, he created Indonesia's Movement to Save Earth (Indonesia Bergerak Menyelamatkan Bumi) and has been acting as Chairman of the Movement's Steering Committee. He also initiated and lead the Movement for a Great Indonesia (Pergerakan Indonesia Maju or PIM) in 2016.

He obtained Bachelor Degree in Theology and Philosophy from State Islamic University of Jakarta (1982), and both Master and Doctoral degrees from Interdepartmental Program in Islamic Studies, University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), in 1998 and 1991 consecutively.

He received many awards in national and international level, for instance, from the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and State of Penang in 2013, from Italian Government in 2012; He was awarded Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation (August, 2016, Doctor Honoris Causa on Islamic Sciences from Fatoni University Thailand (March, 2017), then the Oder of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star from the Japan Emperor (November, 2018), and lastly, Madaliyyat Khidmat al-Mujtama’ from United Arab Emirates (November 2018).
